This is where the Rust King gets his Deathclaws from. We raise them here, break them down, and train the poor bastards for combat in the field or the arena. The ones I've got are almost ready; all that's left is to fit them with their armor. This will make a lot of noise, so be ready for uninvited guests. They always come.

Beastmaster Lina,[1][2] known in-game simply as Beastmaster, is a member of the Rust King's Army and a deathclaw tamer in Appalachia in Fallout 76, introduced in the Burning Springs update. She is the primary character in the public event Gearin' Up.

Background[]

Beastmaster Lina became affiliated with the Rust King's Army through her father, who owned a center for training police dogs before the Great War. Lina herself grew up around dogs and developed skills for training animals much like her father.[3] Because the Rust King sees deathclaws as kin,[4] he specifically wanted animal trainers to tame the beasts and turn them into warriors, hence why he sought out and recruited Lina's father into the army.[5]

Although Lina's father worked for the Rust King in this capacity for a time, he apparently "did something dumb and unnecessary," implying that he was killed afterward. Lina was not as confident about her own animal training talents, but took over as beastmaster following the incident involving her father. The Rust King keeps Lina around because of his respect for her skills and her self-proclaimed status as a survivor, not to mention the fact that she did not make the same unspecified mistake her father did.[3][5]

Lina runs her deathclaw-taming operation out of Jackson Junkyard, close by to the Rust Kingdom. At the junkyard, Lina is in charge of raising deathclaws, taming the wild beasts, and training them for use in combat, either in the Rust Kingdom's arena for gladiatorial purposes, or for general use in the field by patrols of Rust raiders.[6] Despite the difficulty of handling giant dangerous creatures like deathclaws, Beastmaster Lina has found success in this venture, seeing it like training any other wild animal by using punishments and rewards.[3]

Lina forges armor that is tailor-made for each deathclaw, and it is near-impossible to remove once placed on the beast. Not all deathclaws survive the procedure of having armor placed on them, but Lina sees it like culling the weak, while enhancing the strength of the deathclaws hardy enough to withstand the installation of the armor. On top of this, the deathclaws with armor "stay pissed off forever."[7] She even maintains "starvation training" for the deathclaws, and threatens to serve up anyone who messes with the beasts as their "first meal."[1]

In some respects, Lina adopts a philosophy of might making right, similar to the Rust King himself:[8] the armor-fitting process for the deathclaws requires the tamers to "not [care] about their feelings on the matter,"[7] and she is more than willing to permit the killing of other Rust raiders who intrude on her operation.[9][10] However, Lina is not totally without empathy in her position; a part of her still feels a tinge of regret for what she must do to condition these living beings, lamenting that her training is based almost entirely on violence (or the mere threat of it).[6][11][12] She even sees particularly valuable trainee deathclaws as being worth more than the lives of other humans around her.[13] Nevertheless, she is still committed, or perhaps resigned, to her role as beastmaster, and does her job well on top of everything, as she says that no one else in the Rust King's Army could do what she does.[14] Although she has several deathclaw handlers working under her, Lina keeps them on a short leash and forces them to undergo trials which they must survive, in order to prove themselves worthy of working with the deathclaws that she has trained.[2]

My Dad used to train police dogs, had his own little center and everything. Taught me all there was to know so that I could take over one day. In a way I did, I suppose... Oh well. Next question?"

Beastmaster Lina: "By not caring about their feelings on the matter. I forge the armors myself, tailor made for each Deathclaw. It never comes off once put on. It's another way the weak are culled, and the deadly are made even deadlier. Those who survive the procedure are truly strong... and they stay pissed off forever."

Beastmaster Lina: "The Rust King despises weakness - the frail must die or grow stronger, and the strong must maintain their edge. This place is the crucible for both. Our Deathclaws are tested by combat, but I fit them with armor first. You'll need to gather some metal for me, like the piece in that barrel. This will not be easy. This place will test you as well."
