Bawls Guarana (named Bawls bottle in-game) is a consumable item in Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel.

Background[]

Bawls Guarana started as the brainchild of a 20-year-old college graduate named Hoby Buppert, who in 1997 was looking for an alternative to coffee. As part of a class project, he came up with a carbonated and non-alcoholic beverage made with guarana, a highly-caffeinated berry native to the Amazonian rainforest. The drink is named "Bawls" for the caffeinated "bounce" it provides, as it contains a natural form of caffeine nearly three times stronger than that found in traditional sodas.

Looking for a place to settle, Hoby Buppert chose Texas, a quiet place conducive to the growth of Guarana. The company only marketed its drinks in Texas, never looking to expand because of the dominance of the market leader, the Nuka-Cola Corporation. Nonetheless, before the Great War, Bawls Guarana concluded a lucrative contract with Vault-Tec, which wanted to build the Corporate Vault in Texas. They sponsored the construction in exchange for the exclusive right for only its drink to be allowed in the vault, at the expense of Nuka-Cola, which is absent from this region.

Characteristics[]

Despite advertising in Carbon, Bawls bottles can only be found in the Corporate Vault, especially in the Bawls vending machine that contains 9 bottles (and 4 more if the machine is destroyed). Each bottle will heal 1/4 of the Initiate's Hit Points until 2/5 with the skill First-Aid at maximum level.

Notes[]

  • The in-game explanation to why there is only Bawls Guarana in Texas is that no other company—Nuka-Cola nor anyone else—has ever chosen to compete with Bawls Guarana in this region and, likewise, Bawls Guarana never expanded its business outside of the region. Bawls Guarana is the only drink in Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel.
  • Bawls bottle caps are worth 100 regular bottle caps each.

Behind the scenes[]

  • The drink is based on the real-life Bawls Guarana, whose founder is Hoby Buppert.[1]
  • Bawls Guarana is sold at a variety of collectors' sites such as Thinkgeek and has in the past been sold at electronics stores such as CompUSA.
  • The name is a play on the slang term for being "bold and daring".[1]
