Look, I don't know who you are but you don't belong here. The Super Mutants have overrun our brothers at the Galaxy News Radio building, and we're headed there to back them up. You can tag along if you want. But keep your head down and try not to do anything... stupid.Sentinel Sarah Lyons

The Battle of GNR Plaza(N1) was a battle between super mutant attackers and the garrison of the Lyons' Brotherhood of Steel outpost at the GNR building plaza in late 2277.

Background[]

By 2277, Lyons' Brotherhood had struck a deal with Three Dog, the host of Galaxy News Radio and owner of the GNR building in Chevy Chase, to use the building as an outpost in exchange for providing him with protection against the super mutants and other threats of the Washington, D.C. ruins. This outpost quickly became a strategic point for the Brotherhood, as it was one of their only guaranteed safe havens in the otherwise super mutant-infested ruins.[1] As such, a garrison of Brotherhood paladins and knights was stationed at the building to provide defense, under the command of Knight Sergeant Wilks.[2] Lyons' Pride, the elite unit led by Sentinel Sarah Lyons, was also involved in the outpost's defense,[3] though they were not always stationed there.[4]

Events[]

At some point after August 17, 2277, at the same time as the early stages of the Lone Wanderer's search for their father, a large group of super mutants traveling through Chevy Chase attacked the GNR building plaza, almost overrunning it. Lyons' Pride was sent to reinforce the Brotherhood garrison stationed there and help repel the attack.[4]

While making their way to the GNR building, the Pride was forced to fight through entrenched super mutants in and around Early Dawn Elementary who were blocking their path. During these initial engagements, Initiate Jennings, a trainee under Paladin Vargas of Lyons' Pride, was killed by the mutants,(N3) in part due to his mentor's oversight.[Non-game 1] However, Lyons' Pride managed to reach the garrison and help repel the mutant assault. Afterwards, they would later be recalled to the Citadel for further operations.[5]

The Lone Wanderer's involvement[]

The Lone Wanderer may have joined the battle if they entered Chevy Chase early on in their search for their father.(N2) If so, they would have met Lyons' Pride and joined them as they fought their way to the GNR building plaza. From there, the Pride and the Lone Wanderer would manage to come up behind the super mutants assaulting the building and wipe them out with the aid of the remaining GNR garrison members.[6]

In this scenario, the mutant force would also include a super mutant behemoth, which would burst through the rubble, killing a member of the Pride, Initiate Reddin, in the process. The Lone Wanderer and the remaining Brotherhood soldiers would ultimately manage to take down the behemoth, possibly with the help of a Fat Man launcher dropped by a deceased Brotherhood knight.[6](N2) This would end the assault. The outpost would later clean up and reorganize its defenses, while the remaining members of Lyons' Pride would similarly return to the Citadel.[5]

Aftermath[]

With the assault on the GNR station cleared, the garrison managed to re-secure the area. As a precaution against any further mutant assaults, the Brotherhood still increased its patrol rotations near the GNR outpost.[7] However, based on Sentinel Lyons' after-action assessments, this was unlikely, as she believed the GNR raiding party was merely on its way to reinforce super mutant positions on the Mall in their conflict against Talon Company.[8] Indeed, although super mutant patrols would continue to infest Chevy Chase through 2277, they would be considered normal and negligible in following security reports.[9]

Whether or not Initiate Reddin survived this battle,(N3) she would ultimately die in combat sometime prior to the Lone Wanderer's arrival at the Citadel after their escape from the Enclave's capture of the Jefferson Memorial,[10] possibly being posthumously promoted to paladin by Sentinel Lyons.[11] Her death would open up a vacant spot in Lyons' Pride for recruiting.[12]

Notes[]

Clarifications
  • ^ (N1) This is an unofficial, editor-made title used to distinguish the event.
  • ^ (N2) Player-determinant. In lore terms, it is confirmed that there was a battle against super mutants at GNR which Lyons' Pride fought in, and that Jenning and Reddin both died in combat. However, the Lone Wanderer's and the super mutant behemoth's presence during the battle are entirely dependent on the player character visiting the location.
    • If the player character visits GNR as part of Following in His Footsteps, then Lyons' Pride will be present for the battle, including the scripted attack of the super mutant behemoth and Initiate Reddin's death. Initiate Jennings and the dead knight with the Fat Man will also be present, explained as casualties of the battle. This means that the Lone Wanderer participated in the battle, as did the behemoth.
    • If the player character visits at any later point, like after having skipped ahead to Scientific Pursuits without meeting Three Dog, then they will not see the battle happening: Lyons' Pride and the Brotherhood corpses are not present, and neither are the attacking super mutants (a few super mutants are still around, but they are not the same ones). However, the behemoth attack will still happen if the player character walks near the bus or the wall of Early Dawn Elementary.[13] In this situation, the the Lone Wanderer did not participate in the battle, and the behemoth attack is a separate event from the battle.
    • If the player character never visits GNR at all, then the Lone Wanderer did not participate in the battle, and the behemoth also never attacked.
  • ^ (N3) In any situation where the player character did not visit GNR for the battle, then the Brotherhood's casualties during the battle cannot be verified.
    • It can assumed that Jennings was indeed killed in this battle, as his death predates the Lone Wanderer's possible arrival.
    • Since Reddin dies in the player-triggered behemoth attack, it can then only be confirmed that she died at some point prior to the Lone Wanderer reaching the Citadel during The Waters of Life.

Unfortunately, Paladin Vargas, whose job is to train initiates and steer them away from heavy fighting, has failed in this responsibility. His oversight has recently resulted in an attack on a ground of Brotherhood of Steel Initiates. Initiate Jennings bore the full brunt of a Super Mutant attack, and recently succumbed to the wounds."
