Automaton is a challenge in the Fallout: New Vegas add-on Old World Blues.
Challenge requirements[]
“Build a robot bent on destruction.”— Challenge description
The Courier must perform the experiment at the X-8 research center's splicing laboratory (go through the left-hand doorway looking from the entrance) that involves splicing a robot and an unusual specimen. The resulting creation will be a hostile robobrain; however, combat is unnecessary, as it will self-destruct within a short time.

- This challenge is not repeatable.
- The holotape required to unlock the experiment option at the splicing laboratory can be found on top of the kennel cage that has no door in the X-8 kennel; accessing this area requires the X-8 kennel key from the X-13 research facility, which itself requires completing the side quest Sonic Emitter Upgrade to enhance the sonic emitter.
- Once both these steps are completed, inside the kennel the holotape can be obtained either by jumping on the railing and using the railing closest to the cage with the door open to get on top of that cage, then work over to the cage without the door, or by entering the X-8 testing facility and then using the exit in the observation room with a workbench, which comes out onto the kennel catwalks overlooking the cages.
