Behind the scenes[]
The Athens Lunatic Asylum is based on a real-world location of the same name in Athens, Ohio. Like the message box mentions in Fallout 76, the real-world Athens Lunatic Asylum was part of the Kirkbride Plan for building mental asylums in the United States during the late 19th century. In the real world, the mental hospital closed in 1993 and the historical site was redeveloped into "The Ridges" for mixed usage.
