Civilization. The Brotherhood and Responders together have paid a high price to make that word mean something in Appalachia - We win here, now, Responders and Brotherhood together... or we will die. So look to your left, look to your right. Promise to give your all to protect them, and they will protect you. Make no mistake, this will be the toughest fight of our lives. But we will win, because we're fighting for something. For each other, for our children, for civilization. Now let's show these Muties what we're made of.Paladin Taggerdy

The Appalachian super mutant conflict or the Brotherhood-super mutant war in Appalachia was a major military conflict that saw the Brotherhood of Steel and its allies clash with the super mutants to protect the inhabitants of Appalachia. The first phase culminated in the decisive assault on the super mutant-entrenched town of Huntersville in 2086. The operation was conducted by the Appalachian Brotherhood in conjunction with the Responders. In the 2100s, the conflict would reignite due to the experiments of Dr. Blackburn, forcing the second iteration of the Appalachian chapter to intervene.

Background[]

In 2075, West Tek, a large contractor for the US government established a regional headquarters in Appalachia. By 2076, they began to conduct experiments on the people of Huntersville with Forced Evolutionary Virus. The experiment led to an outbreak, and as a result the village was isolated and put under company guard, with any test subjects that attempted to leave the area hunted down and eliminated. West Tek would continue to develop their strain of FEV until the bombs dropped in 2077.[1]

By 2079, the Appalachian division of the Enclave under Thomas Eckhart began to take an interest in the Forced Evolutionary Virus. They desired to continue the war with China[2] by launching nuclear ICBMs via the Appalachian Automated Launch System. However, in order to do so, the system had to first be tricked to raise the DEFCON rating by making it seem Appalachia was being invaded by an outside force.[3] The Enclave would first send out a scout team to Huntersville, though contact with the unit was lost.[4] A second team was sent to the West Tek research center, who reported that the facility was abandoned, the FEV vats were neutralized, and it would take a science team to scavenge enough data to recreate the "tough, violent, dangerous" mutants that were requested by command.[5]

Despite worry from the overseeing officer, the science team was authorized by Eckhart in June 2080.[6] The mission was successful at recreating the mutants, and they began to release them into the Wasteland. By December 2082, the mutants had begun to cause significant issues for Responders near Huntersville.[7]

Order of events[]

First phase[]

Beginning of hostilities[]

By October 2082, the Responders had become aware of the super mutant threat that was emanating from the area around Huntersville. By this time, the Responders had begun to come into open conflict with the super mutants. Despite the Brotherhood requests for ammunition, they were still able to temporarily contain the hostile mutants.[8] However, after the Christmas Flood in December 2082, the strength and membership of the Responders was drastically reduced.[9]

The group took what little remaining supplies they had and migrated from Charleston north to Morgantown Airport, far from the mutant stronghold. With the sudden lack of Responder presence and patrols in the region, groups of super mutants were able to move further into the Forest, settling in Summersville, the newly-uncovered New Gad, and parts of the Charleston ruins.[9]

The Responders quickly established a new base and headquarters at the airport. Finally seeing the real danger that the super mutants posed to Appalachia's inhabitants, the Brotherhood joined forces with the Responders to prepare to eliminate the threat at its source.[10] Following this, the Brotherhood of Steel clashed with the super mutants, battling them in the area around Huntersville. This battle was witnessed by members of a nearby raider group called the Trappers, who fled when it appeared the Brotherhood was being pushed back. The Trappers camp was also attacked by the super mutants shortly after.[11]

By March 2086, the super mutant conflict began to intensify significantly. This caused basic training at Camp Venture to be rushed for new Brotherhood recruits in an attempt to increase available manpower for the upcoming battle.[12][13]

The Battle of Huntersville[]

In May 2086, after a rousing speech from Brotherhood leader Paladin Elizabeth Taggerdy, the allied forces launched their attack on the city.[10] The battle against the mutants was strenuous and costly, with moderate losses sustained by the Brotherhood and Responders. Ultimately, the alliance was victorious in eradicating the mutants from Huntersville.[14]

By June 1, 2086, the campaign against the super mutants was over, with Paladin Swafford, Squire De Silva, and at least five others killed, along with an unknown number of Responders. A Brotherhood graveyard was erected nearby where those who had fallen during the battle were given their respects and were laid to rest.[15][16][17] High Elder Roger Maxson, founder of the Brotherhood of Steel, congratulated the Appalachian chapter on their victory and commended them for their sacrifice. He even chose to personally write a eulogy for Squire De Silva.[14][18]

However the alliance's efforts would not be in vain, as their victory had temporarily eradicated the super mutants' presence in Appalachia.[15] The Brotherhood temporarily occupied the town, setting up barriers and a small recon station. The increased patrols in the region further suppressed raider activity, allowing for caravans to more readily travel between the Forest and the Mire.[15]

At some point following the battle and the end of the Brotherhood's occupation of the city, Huntersville was reoccupied by super mutants. The settlement continued to be occupied by them between 2102[19] and 2104.[20]

Second phase[]

In the early 2100s, a former employee of West Tek, Doctor Edgar Blackburn, reunited with his former colleagues, Doctor Jain, Doctor Farha. They would later be joined by Nellie Wright. Together this group had begun working to see if they could improve the Forced Evolutionary Virus. This project was initially aimed at developing FEV so that humanity could use it to deal with the long-term ramifications of living in an environment polluted by radiation and diseases that arose in the wake of the Great War.[21] In doing so, they conducted extremely inhumane and fatal experiments in Vault 96 on non-consenting wastelanders such as Cassie Halloway. In order to acquire human test subjects, Blackburn contracted a group of mercenaries called the Hellcat Company who did not question the ethics of his work.[22]

In October 2103, the Brotherhood First Expeditionary Force under the command of Paladin Leila Rahmani, arrived in Appalachia to reestablish the chapter. Fort Atlas was chosen to be their headquarters and they quickly began to recruit from the region. Their presence soon attracted a number of local petitioners, who came to the Brotherhood for a variety of personal reasons.[23] One of these individuals was Dr. Blackburn, who was interested in acquiring the Brotherhood's technology and equipment for the purposes of his research.[24]

Knight Daniel Shin, Rahmani's second-in-command, was disinclined to acquiesce to most of these requests. However, his response to Blackburn's proposition was not as absolute, though they were unaware of the subject of his work. Shin had no interest in assisting Blackburn in his research, stating that funding private projects was not part of the Brotherhood's mission, unless Blackburn agreed to work under their supervision and provide the results of his research to the Brotherhood exclusively.[25] Shin further clarified that the Brotherhood would take a pointed interest in Blackburn's research in case it proved to be dangerous.[26] He was also pleasantly surprised by Blackburn's display of commendable discipline, that was showcased in his willingness to let other petitioners be seen first, and pointed out that Scribe Odessa Valdez could potentially be interested in his research, should he ever visit Fort Atlas again.[27]

After establishing themselves in the area and swelling their numbers with new recruits, Scribe Valdez informed Paladin Rahmani and Knight Shin that she had discovered a possible way for them to contact Lost Hills. Rahmani, Shin and an initiate from Vault 76 travelled to investigate the Enclave research facility underneath Transmission station 1AT-U03. However while there, they received an emergency beacon signal from Fort Atlas, which was under attack. This forced the group to return to the fort immediately.[28]

Attacks on Fort Atlas and other settlements[]

Upon arriving at Fort Atlas, the group are met by Scribe Valdez, who reported the situation. Super mutants had blown a hole through the substructure and had been pouring into the basement of the facility. Several initiates were killed, but they were able to hold the line and repulse several assaults. They had set up barricades, establishing a kill-zone in the substructure. Down below, the barricade and the initiates still held the line in between mutant attacks. Valdez explains that the attacks have been occurring in waves for several hours, and the situation is a war of attrition they cannot afford.[29] Due to the current schism within the new chapter, Rahmani and Shin come to blows over how to proceed. However, when Valdez explains that she had explosive charges prepared as a last resort, which could be repurposed as sealing charges to collapse the tunnels near enemy points of entry. A precision strike is agreed upon, Rahmani, Shin and the initiate would make their way deeper into the cave systems to detonate the explosives. Valdez remained behind and focused on helping the wounded and marshaling the initiates. Their plan would succeed, and they able to secure Fort Atlas from further mutant attacks via that method.[29]

Not long after, super mutants began to attack and raid innocent settlements across the entire region, including Foundation.[30] Reports and pleas for support poured into Brotherhood hands following their successful defense of Fort Atlas. Being another regional power, Foundation was also able to repulse the mutant attacks targeting them and provide what aid they could to nearby settlements. They also sent a messenger with information for the Brotherhood of Steel to Fort Atlas, this was in relation to a possible source for the super mutants. Foundation's scouts had been tracking their movements to a location known as Uncanny Caverns.[31][32]

All of this information was relayed to Paladin Rahmani and Knight Shin. Rahmani argued that the Brotherhood should mobilize available forces to assist in defending these settlements. Shin was initially hesitant but upon hearing the reports, he agreed with Rahmani that the Brotherhood could not allow the mutants to rampage and kill innocent civilians. After a heated discussion, it was decided that Knight Shin would lead a recon team consisting of himself, Initiate Norland, Initiate Erika Hewsen and an initiate from Vault 76, they would travel to Uncanny caverns to verify if it was the source of the mutants causing the attacks.[33][34] Meanwhile, Paladin Rahmani would mobilize the Brotherhood's available manpower and what supplies they could spare to help those settlements that were under attack. The remainder of Brotherhood forces would stay at Fort Atlas to defend the organization's headquarters.[35][36]

The Brotherhood would even dispatch a group of initiates to Foundation. However, following a supply run, Brotherhood refugee Marcia Leone would end up being reported missing by the group as they returned to Fort Atlas a few days later. This concerned the Brotherhood, as they were receiving ever-increasing reports about a numbers of disappearances in Appalachia.[37]

Recon mission to Uncanny caverns[]

In 2104, the Brotherhood launched a recon mission to Uncanny Caverns in response to recent super mutant attacks on the region. After a short mission briefing, the team progresses further down into the cave system, they encounter and dispatch three floaters. Following this, the group is forced to clear a blockage in one of the passages. The team is temporarily separated after a rock slide, with Shin and the initiate being ambushed by super mutant berserkers. After the skirmish, Shin receives a radio transmission from Initiate Hewsen. The two find a way through and proceed into the caves only to find the corpse of Initiate Norland.[38]

They follow a blood trail to a hidden crevice. Upon entering, they find Hewsen unharmed, but Knight Shin is temporarily injured when he is forced to save her from an exploding trap. He had utilized his power armor to take the impact of the explosive, leaving her alive. Immediately afterwards, a couple waves of super mutants rushed into the central cavern, forcing the initiates to kill them and defend the injured knight. Following the battle, Hewsen tends to Shin's injuries, while the Vault Dweller searches the area for clues. Within a huge gore pile, he found bloodied skeletons, one of which belonged to a deceased dweller of Vault 96. The corpse also had a damaged Pip-Boy attached to its arm. Shin orders the group to return to Fort Atlas to share their findings.[38]

Investigating the disappearances[]

The Brotherhood began to investigate both the raiders from Crater and the Blue Ridge Caravan Company to see if they have any knowledge about the disappearances, or if they are related to the mutants. The initiate from Vault 76 was tasked by Scribe Valdez to search for leads on some missing persons, with the main goal of locating Marcia Leone if possible. Upon gaining information and traveling to Crater, the initiate locates Marcia. Together, they investigate the AMS corporate headquarters, there they find implications that Hellcat Company might be involved in the disappearances.[39]

Similarly, an investigation launched against the Blue Ridge Caravan Company by Paladin Rahmani also revealed the Hellcat mercenaries involvement in the kidnapping of caravan members. Dr. Blackburn had been a prominent name on the registry of many caravans that had people go missing, and at this point he became the Brotherhood of Steel's main suspect.[40]

Vault 96[]

After regrouping at Fort Atlas, the Brotherhood was now certain that Dr. Blackburn was responsible for the disappearances, with the victims being used as test subjects for his research. Paladin Rahmani, Knight Shin, and Scribe Valdez and the Vault Dweller discuss a plan of action to save the kidnapped civilians before they become further victims of Blackburn's experiments. Valdez's analysis of the damaged Pip-Boy recovered earlier revealed it originated from Vault 96. Scribe Valdez and the initiate are tasked by Paladin Rahmani to investigate this lead. The Brotherhood also had a secondary objective of securing the Vault's technology, which was also a priority to prevent someone like Blackburn getting a hold of it and using it with malicious intent.[41]

Arriving at Vault 96, they find the Vault door is open slightly. Upon entry, they found the corpses of several Hellcat mercenary scattered about, along with a lone survivor, Corporal Woods. Before succumbing to her injuries, she reveals that the Blood Eagles had already breached the Vault and were fighting inside. She would also reveal to the Brotherhood that the Hellcat Company were hired by Dr. Blackburn to help him with securing the Vault and equipment inside, but her squad was later overrun by the Blood Eagles. They both proceeded deeper inside the vault, killing several Blood Eagles as they advanced. Dr. Blackburn would then come on the P.A. system to request that the initiate and Valdez leave immediately. Regardless the two press on with their mission, they would clear multiple wings of the Vault, eliminating several of the Vault's robotic defenses, and more Blood Eagles. While doing so, the two are able to gather a significant amount of data on Blackburn and his experiments.[41]

When they arrive at the Cryonics Wing, the Brotherhood has an option of forming a temporary alliance with the Blood Eagles. It is discovered that Tally Lang was trapped inside the Cryonics Wing with a few other Blood Eagles. She was in possession of a vault access card that made traversing the Vault easier. Regardless once the door is opened a the two groups eliminate several Mister Gutsies. If spared, Tally and her crew retreat and evacuate from the Vault. Valdez and the initiate then enter the Research Wing. It is there that they locate Cassie Holloway and the other abductees. After safely securing the missing persons, Scribe Valdez radios Fort Atlas for reinforcements once the Vault is cleared and leaves supplies to help the prisoners recover until the medics arrive. In the Overseer's Office, the Brotherhood confront Dr. Blackburn and place him under arrest for his crimes. He is then transported back to Fort Atlas to be integrated.[42]

End of experiments[]

Following the apprehension of Dr. Edgar Blackburn in Vault 96 and learning the scale of his atrocities, he was interrogated further by Paladin Rahmani, Knight Shin, and Scribe Valdez. Blackburn reveals that his allies will be carrying out his final plan for the FEV soon and are preparing to disperse the FEV into the air and water ways. This horrifies the Brotherhood, as it could spread for miles, but Blackburn states he is willing to help stop it. He reveals that his allies are at the West Tek research center, Paladin Rahmani agreed that Blackburn's punishment could be postponed until after they had dealt with the FEV at West Tek. While Shin preferred killing him immediately and razing the lab to the ground, but Valdez warns doing that could still spread the FEV without the lab to keep it contained, so it is agreed to take Blackburn with them to help atone for his actions and face judgement for his crimes at a later date.[43]

The Brotherhood forces arrive at West Tek, and clash with the super mutants guarding the facility. Making their way inside, they killed more super mutants and mutant hounds. Following this, the Brotherhood gained access to the FEV Production Facility, which was patrolled by Hellcat mercenaries under the payroll of Blackburn to defend his co-workers. After eliminating the mercenaries, the initiate, along with Blackburn, Rahmani and Shin head deeper into the complex. There they find Dr. Farha who makes it clear they will proceed with their plan unless Blackburn is released. Speaking to Blackburn reveals he has the only access code to abort the plan, so letting him go is the only way to stop the distribution of the FEV, as long as his fellow scientists are spared as well. With little choice left, he is released, despite Shin's protests. Once inside, he asks Nellie to prepare the test chamber so he can show the Brotherhood the results of their work, despite Farha's shocked pleas. The Brotherhood is livid about this turn of events. They force their way into the test chamber. However, it is too late as Blackburn is exposed to the FEV, he then erupts from the test chamber as a unique super mutant behemoth. The Brotherhood are forced to engage and kill him. They then confront the scientists and force them to discontinue their inhumane experiments. The Brotherhood achieves their goal, though it causes the internal conflict between its commanding officers to reach a breaking point.[43](Note 1)

Aftermath[]

The first phase of the conflict saw mutant activity in the region severely limited. Following the eradication of mutants in and around Huntersville, their threat level towards the region disappeared for a number of years. The increased patrols in the region also suppressed raider activity, allowing for caravans to more readily travel between other regions and the Mire.[15] By extension, their efforts in this conflict contributed to preventing a massive catastrophe from unfolding. The Brotherhood and its allies actions hindered the Enclave's plan to launch Appalachia's unused nuclear weapons against China. The Enclave had released the super mutants and Liberators in an attempt to raise the areas DEFCON level so that the launch could be committed. The Allied conflict contributed to limiting the super mutants effects on the region, such that by early 2086, they and the liberators only achieved barely a tick on the DEFCON counter. This forced the Enclave to release the Scorched.[44]

By June 2086, the scorched had been able to raise the DEFCON level. Coinciding with the Brotherhood victory over the mutants in Huntersville, the Enclave plunged into civil conflict. These events quickly lead to the Appalachian division's destruction. This would finally avert the crisis, preventing President Eckhart from launching nuclear ICBMs against the post-war inhabitants of Asia that had survived the Great War.[44]

The second phase saw super mutant forces created by Dr. Blackburn repulsed from multiple settlements. With the Brotherhood being able to deal a final blow to the opposition at West Tek. They had also been able to secure vast amounts of technology and data from Vault 96 after sending a recovery team.[45][46]

Following the death of Dr. Blackburn and the end of his experiments, the super mutants ability to replenish their numbers was negated, and thus their influence in the region was again greatly reduced. But they would still maintain a significant presence in Appalachia. This has resulted in sporadic small-scale clashes between them and local factions lasting into 2105.[47][48]

Clashes around Foundation Outpost[]

In 2105, the Settlers established Foundation Outpost. This was facilitated to create a new settlement outside of Foundation, with the effort being led by Kenneth Dean. They started to construct new wooden buildings across from a radioactive crater, in which they placed a rad scrubber to mitigate the radiation with the help of some technically-proficient settlers.[49] Construction was stalled due to lack of building materials, leading Kenneth to request more from Foundation. However, his men had become anxious over sightings of large figures moving in the tree line, as if watching their activities. These sightings turned to loud noises that disturbed them through the night. Although construction of the outpost steadily continued, Kenneth and his people were put on edge by the disturbances. Finally, on June 26, 2105, Kenneth spotted what appeared to be some brutish figure rummaging through their equipment and scouting the area.[50]

Kenneth made a plan to assemble his crew and investigate more thoroughly, and hopefully run out whatever it was out of their camp. However, three days later, the figures revealed themselves to be super mutants, who assaulted the outpost. As it was still under construction, their defenses were in poor shape. The settlers were all killed by the attacking mutants, with Kenneth hoping that one day someone would fight back against the mutants with more success than they had.[50][51] The Brotherhood of Steel also had an outpost located on the south ridge overlooking the crater. Members of the organization previously patrolled the area around the downed Brotherhood vertibird, but they had also gone missing.[52] These events resulted in constant sporadic clashes between super mutants continuing to enter the area, their efforts were constantly repulsed by volunteers representing multiple factions from around Appalachia.[53]

Notes[]

  • (Note 1) For more information on this topic, see The Catalyst.
  • Farha pleads for mercy, explaining that she and her team can still be valuable assets to helping humanity, despite what happened with Blackburn and the FEV. Shin wants them executed, but Rahmani wants to spare them. It all comes down to the players decision. If the player character responds with uncertainty about whether to kill Farha, Jain, and Nellie, they can speak to everyone to get their thoughts on the matter.
    • (Siding with Shin) If Farha and her team are executed, Rahmani is disappointed that she could not sway Shin or the Vault Dweller to her way of thinking with the Brotherhood and away from that of the elders and loyalty to them. As a result, Rahmani can either be killed or spared depending on the player's decision in conversation. If she is not killed, she leaves before Shin and the Vault Dweller execute Farha, Jain, and Nellie, not wanting to witness the cold-blooded murdering of the scientists after exchanging some final bitter words with Shin after he brands her a traitor and she decides to rebuild the Brotherhood to her way of thinking elsewhere. Shin decides that Rahmani is no longer a member of the Brotherhood and exiles her, stripping her of her title as Paladin, leaving him as the highest-ranking member with his position as Knight to take over leadership of the Appalachian Brotherhood.
    • (Siding with Rahmani) If Farha and her team are spared, Shin is furious, believing Rahmani and the Vault Dweller will only repeat the mistakes of the past. Despite Rahmani's attempts to talk him down, Shin has every intention of returning to New California to report Rahmani's actions to the elders in person. The player can either try to talk him down, or attack him. If attacking him is not chosen, he and Rahmani will exchange some final, bitter words before he takes his leave to head back, collect his initiates, and depart to return to Mariposa and Lost Hills to tell Maxson and the other Elders of Rahmani's actions.
