Anglers possess fleshy bioluminescent growths atop their heads (similar to an anglerfish's illicium) that acts as a camouflage for the ambush predators, disguising them as a sprig of lure weed, an edible flower found in the swampy environments they inhabit, to fool unsuspecting prey.
Gameplay attributes[]
The angler is an aggressive creature with the ability to spit out large, flaming balls of mucus, inflicting heavy incendiary damage to any target in a small radius. In combat, they often rely on these long-ranged attacks but have also been observed to charge at their prey and use their claws, albeit often halting mid-charge to use their preferred method of attack.
Anglers' Energy Resistance is much higher than their Damage Resistance, making ballistic or melee weapons the preferable choice for engaging them in combat. Anglers will not enter buildings or climb stairs. If a player character enters a building the angler will retreat but stay in the general area. Anglers will use their ranged attacks against their foes that they cannot get close to but will retreat if attacked with ranged weapons.
Variants[]
Angler[]
The most common variant of the creature, with all the characteristics described above.
The most powerful angler variant, distinguished by its green radioactive glow. This variant is created from high radiation levels, such as those in the Mire or nuke zones.
Scorched anglers have been inflicted with the Scorched Plague. Green ultracite crystals protrude from the back of their legs, and they have a fleshy, pinkish appearance. Each regular angler variant has a corresponding scorched variant with the same stats, abilities, and items.
Anglers will always spawn far north of the gnarled shallows, near Queen of the Hunt site Alpha (see gallery). This can be found by following the creek from the gnarled shallows to the north.
Notes[]
Anglers in Appalachia hide underwater disguised as lure weed.
Anglers are counted as cryptids for the purposes of completing challenges, despite not being based off of American folklore like most other creatures counted.
Anglers are potential mutations of anglerfish or frogs, sharing the "lure" and upturned jaw of the former, and the limbs, proportions, and habitat of the latter.
