Acadia is the name given to the isolated colony of synths led by the prototype synth DiMA residing on Mount Desert Island in Maine in 2287, so-named after the pre-War observatory they inhabit. They appear as a major faction in the Fallout 4 add-on Far Harbor.
Background[]
Synth liberation[]
The origins of Acadia are rooted and intertwined in the history of its co-founder, DiMA. Created in the Institute as one of two transitory prototypes during the development of the second generation of synthkind,[1] his creators intended to see if a synth could handle independent thought and self-awareness, with DiMA allowed to develop a personality of his own through experience while the other synth was implanted with the memories and personalities of pre-War humans.[2] As the only two of their kind, DiMA developed a family-like bond with the other synth, considering them to be "brothers." This sentient sense of affection ultimately drove him to liberate himself and his brother from the Institute after growing to hate the experiments being performed on them both. Around the late 2180s, DiMA broke them out, though not before the Institute had uploaded one final personality into his brother, that of Boston detective Nick Valentine.[3] Disoriented by the experiments done to him and only remembering the world of 200 years ago, Nick did not recognize DiMA; believing himself to be the human Nick Valentine, DiMA was attacked by his "brother," forcing him to knock Nick out and leave him behind.[4]
Without any concrete idea of what he was supposed to do with himself, a liberated synth (there was no organization like the Railroad to help him at that time), DiMA wandered, trying to put distance between him and the Institute's reach. His travels eventually brought him to the former American Northeast, and the location of Mount Desert Island off of the shores of Maine. DiMA says he did nothing but sit in a cave for an entire year, trying to piece together some semblance of an identity. He eventually arrived at a conclusion: there was nobody to tell him what to do but himself. And what he wanted to do was to create a safe haven for others of his kind, those who also had the courage to escape their bondage under the Institute and live free.[5] He later left that cave and went on to live in a pre-War naval submarine base, where he remained when it was later discovered by a sect of the Children of Atom.[6] DiMA grew fond of the Children as they were the first to truly accept his artificial nature and befriended their leader, Confessor Martin. From this friendship, DiMA eventually gave them the base as their new home,[7] while he departed to make his dream of a synth safe haven come true.
At some point after leaving the naval base, DiMA had two fateful encounters with the would-be co-founders of Acadia: the synth scientist Faraday and Chase, a female courser who came to Mount Desert Island on a retrieval mission but was swayed to DiMA's ideology of synth liberation. Together, they claimed the pre-War observatory situated on the peak of the mountain within the old Acadia National Park, appropriating its name for their new colony where synths could live freely never having to hide their nature.[8]
Island neighbors[]
Despite DiMA's hopes for Acadia to be a self-sufficient place of safety for synthkind, his morals did not allow him to ignore the worsening conditions on the island that threatened the lives of the inhabitants of the coastal Far Harbor. Against the word of his advisors, DiMA convinced Faraday to create the Fog condenser technology and share it with Far Harbor, giving them a better chance of survival in exchange for being the synth colony's lifeline to the world, trading supplies and helping send runaway synths arriving to the island in the direction of the colony. As a consequence however, relations between Acadia and the Children of Atom from their base, the Nucleus became strained as the Children considered the Fog to be a sacred omen of Atom.[9]

- ↑ DiMA: "We were prototypes, Nick. The first synths capable of independent thinking and judgment."
(DiMA's dialogue) - ↑ Nick Valentine: "Keep talking..."
DiMA: "One of the Institute's experiments had to do with how our brains could process personality. If we could handle individualized feelings and behaviors. I was allowed to develop mine based on experience. But with you, they wanted to try transferring an entire personality into you."
(DiMA's dialogue) - ↑ DiMA: "I couldn't let them do it to you anymore. We were the only two prototypes they made. I literally saw myself in you... You were my brother, Nick. I helped you escape the Institute. We left together."
(DiMA's dialogue) - ↑ DiMA's memory
- ↑ DiMA: "But after my escape felt secured, I was left with nothing. No programmed task, no false memories. I spent a year just sitting in a cave. Just sitting. One day, it finally occurred that maybe I could decide for myself what to do, who I was. I've been doing that ever since."
(DiMA's dialogue) - ↑ The Sole Survivor: "The Children of Atom on this island. You were helping them?"
DiMA: "Yes. I know their faith in radiation as a type of god is a bit... different, but who am I to judge? I was using a submarine base as a home when Martin and his followers stumbled inside. They had been cast out of Far Harbor for their beliefs."
(DiMA's dialogue) - ↑ DiMA: "And I was friends with the previous leader of the Children of Atom, Confessor Martin. I even gave them their headquarters, the submarine base they named the Nucleus."
(DiMA's dialogue) - ↑ DiMA: "Beyond that, we just want to live in peace. I don't have any grand plans for expansion. Just existing as we are now is enough."
(DiMA's dialogue) - ↑ The Sole Survivor: "You're keeping Far Harbor safe, is that it?"
DiMA: "Not exactly. They're fiercely independent, but the Fog was starting to choke more and more of the island, so I proposed a trade. We would give them the technology to keep the Fog at bay, in return for them being a lifeline to the outside world. A safe dock and a place to buy supplies. Unfortunately, the Children of Atom view the radioactive fog as a holy portent, and their bloodied history with Far Harbor puts us at odds."
