For real world information about Abraham Lincoln, see Abraham Lincoln on Wikipedia. |
Abraham "Abe" Lincoln, sometimes honored as the Great Emancipator,[1] was the 16th president of the United States of America, serving from 1861 to 1865.[2][3]
Background[]
Lincoln was the leader of the United States in the American Civil War era, who first called for American citizens to join in the effort by way of a draft.[4][5] At the end of the conflict, Lincoln announced victory and decreed the abolishment of slavery by way of historical speeches and documents including the Gettysburg Address and the Emancipation Proclamation.[6][7]
Referred to as the Great Emancipator, the period of time in which Lincoln served as president was exhibited as part of the Museum of History before the Great War.[2][1] The former president's face can also be seen on pennies found after the war, as well as on placards in Arlington House and the Lincoln Memorial.[8] His emancipation of the slaves is glorified by members of the Temple of the Union.[9] President Lincoln was struck down by assassin John Wilkes Booth, and wanted posters were distributed on April 20, 1865, offering a $100,000 reward for Booth's capture.[10] The loss of Lincoln to an assassin is lamented by those who honor him after the war.[11]
Lincoln is idolized by the Abolitionists, escaped slaves who seek to bring down the institution of post-War slavery in the same way that Lincoln ended slavery in pre-War America. In that same vein, Lincoln is despised by the slavers, who seek to destroy as much of his legacy as possible, whether that be personal effects or the memorial to his name built in Washington, D.C.[12] Hannibal Hamlin, leader of the Abolitionists, will also offer a dubiously historical biography of Lincoln:
Notes[]
- The ruins of the Museum of History in Fallout 3 contain a number of Lincoln-related items that can be sold to Abolitionist leader Hannibal Hamlin, slaver Leroy Walker, or historian Abraham Washington. These include two equipable items that once belonged to Lincoln, Lincoln's repeater and Lincoln's hat.
- A plaque in Wixon's Shovel Museum references Abraham Lincoln.[13]
- A terminal in the Whitespring presidential cottage mentions Lincoln as having stayed there.[14]
- The Enclave membership questionnaire at the Whitespring bunker lists Lincoln as one of the incorrect answers.[15]
- Upon joining the Enclave, it is possible to ask MODUS if Lincoln was killed by aliens.[16]
- A statue piece of Lincoln's head is tied to Lady Jane's brahmin in the broc flower cave in Fallout: New Vegas.
- The athlete exam at the Pioneer Scout camp includes a question referencing Lincoln's reputation as a wrestler.[17]
- The Rail Splitter outfit was offered as a Fallout 1st reward in Fallout 76 from February 6 to March 5, 2024 (crossing over Lincoln's birthday on February 12). The outfit evokes Lincoln's preferred method of dress with a greatcoat, though it is blue, rather than the President's solemn black. The "Rail Splitter" was a nickname used by Lincoln, especially during the 1860 presidential election, calling back to his history of splitting fence rails during his youth.
Appearances[]
Abraham Lincoln is mentioned in Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, the Fallout 4 add-on Nuka World and Fallout 76.
Behind the scenes[]
- Abraham Lincoln was the real-world 16th president of the United States.
- Hannibal Hamlin's biography of Lincoln is relatively accurate to real life for the overall sequence of events. Though the meanings have become distorted, Hamlin mentions Lincoln's birth in Kentucky and childhood on the American Frontier ("Tucky Tearsman," i.e. a Kentucky frontiersman), brief military service in the Black Hawk War ("fought Raiders in the war of the black hawks"), and political career in Illinois ("settled down to rule the Linoy").
- Several members of the Abolitionists (Hannibal Hamlin, Caleb Smith, Simone Cameron, and Bill Seward) are named after real-world members of Lincoln's government.
- The transcripts of two famous speeches delivered by Lincoln are found both at the real-world and in-game Lincoln Memorial, including the Gettysburg Address and Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address.
- The Gettysburg Address is also displayed in the Capitol Preservation Society, as well as the Emancipation Proclamation, a document penned by Lincoln. An adapted line from the address ("of the people, for the people") is also quoted in Fallout 4, used by John Hancock as his governance philosophy for the town of Goodneighbor.
- A line from Lincoln's First Inaugural Address can be seen in Arlington House and within the interior of the memorial, as well as on an interactible kiosk at the Museum of History.
- The name of the Fallout 4 quest A House Divided references a quote by Lincoln.
