That's the greatest plan I've ever heard in my entire life.— Said the Courier, sarcastically

A Pair of Dead Desperados, II[Non-game 1] is an unmarked quest in Fallout: New Vegas.

Quick walkthrough[]

Unmarked Quest: A Pair of Dead Desperados, II
Locate the Wins hideout slightly west-northwest of the H&H Tools factory and speak with Sammy and Pauline Wins
Attack and kill them both.
Pass a 55 Speech skill check to convince Pauline to give up on their plan to rob the Strip;
acquire the safe combination from Sammy.
Retrieve Vance's 9mm submachine gun from the nearby safe.
Reward: Vance's 9mm submachine gun
Kill Sammy & Pauline: Vance's lucky hat & Vikki's bonnet

Detailed walkthrough[]

After acquiring the transcript from Primm Slim regarding the attempt to hack him during A Pair of Dead Desperados, I, though the directions are vague, it points to a location near Westside, that being the Wins hideout which is found by going west-northwest from the H&H Tools factory outside North Vegas Square; the shack will be found on the north side of the asphalt road with a door on the north face.

Inside the hideout, one will meet the pair of thieves who made off with Vance's 9mm submachine gun from the Vikki and Vance Casino in Primm, Sammy and Pauline Wins. Speaking with both of them one after the other, they both talk up the plan to pull off their "big score" by smuggling their new 9mm SMG onto the New Vegas Strip and rob one or all of its casinos, thus cementing their name in legend even bigger than Vikki and Vance themselves.

At this point, the player character can either flat-out tell them that that's the worst plan they have ever heard or pass a 55 Speech skill check to assure them that their plan is great. Failing the check or bluntly replying to the stupidity of their plan will lead to nothing but a cold farewell, while passing will cause Pauline to crack from nervousness and express having second thoughts about their plan, offering to have Sammy give up the gun to get rid of the temptation, to which the man will agree similarly and give up the combination to their safe that contains the unique 9mm SMG and an assortment of other loot, completing the quest.

Alternatively, the player character can simply gun them down to acquire the unique pieces of headwear from their bodies, Vikki's bonnet and Vance's lucky hat. However, there is no key to unlock the safe nor any other way to get the combination from Sammy, thus one will only be able to acquire Vance's 9mm SMG in this manner by picking the Very Hard-level lock.

Behind the scenes[]

The combination for the safe in the Wins hideout, 05-23-34, is a reference to the date that the American spree killers, Bonnie and Clyde, the inspiration for Vikki and Vance, were shot to death by law enforcement in Louisiana.

  1. Fallout: New Vegas Official Game Guide Collector's Edition p.301: "Free Quest: A Pair of Dead Desperados, II
This Quest makes more sense if you head to Primm [4. 17] and visit the Vikki & Vance Casino first. Sammy and Pauline Win look familiar, and they have an extremely ambitious plan for holding up all the Vegas casinos. Pauline tells you the plan in detail. You can:
Tell them that plan is going to get them both killed.
Lie that the plan is the greatest plan you’ve ever heard.
    Gun them both down.
Assuming you used Speech, Pauline realizes what a crazy plan that really was, and tells you to talk to Sammy about giving you Vance’s Gun, the same gun stolen from the Vikki & Vance Casino! Then tell the brawn of this two-bit operation to give you the gun, and he obliges. It’s in the safe, and he tells you the combination.
Kill the incompetent pair for two more Unique Items.
    • Unique Item: Vance’s Lucky Hat [7 /95]
    • Unique Item: Vikki’s Bonnet [8/95]
    • Unique Weapon: Vance’s 9mm Submachine Gun [7/42]"
