Follow the trail of a strange flare coming from the Shenandoah National Park

A Bump in the Road is a side quest in Fallout 76, introduced in the Milepost Zero update. It can be started after reaching level 20, by investigating a flare at Stony Man Lookout.

Quick walkthrough[]

Detailed walkthrough[]

This quest's first objective is to investigate a flare coming from Stony Man Lookout in the Skyline Valley region. The location is occupied by hostile super mutants. Search the area by heading under the lookout tower itself, where two metal cages are found. Inside of one is the corpse of Luke, a Blue Ridge Caravan Company employee. On his body is Luke's holotape; listen to its contents, which describe how he was guarding a shipment of cargo under the leadership of Marley.

This cargo is still on the premises. Head to the southwest edge of the location, where a dead pack brahmin lies on top of a makeshift table. Take the Blue Ridge cargo from its inventory. The next stop is to head to Milepost Zero, on the southern edge of the map, at the end of the road southeast of the Big Meadows gas well. Enter the interior, where Marley is in conversation with Joanna Mayfield, the head of the Blue Ridge Caravan Company.

Marley explains that she runs Milepost Zero, her own branch or franchise of Blue Ridge running caravan routes in Skyline Valley, as the old trade routes in the Shenandoah National Park used to be good business. There was once a small crew, but dangerous conditions in the region damaged their operations and funding depleted. Joanna has since been threatening to close it down, but is giving Marley one last chance.

If one agrees to help out and fill the recently-deceased Luke's shoes, Marley will ask the player to help foot the bill of getting Milepost Zero up and running again. Invest 500 caps to get started. Following further conversation, Marley will put the player to work: the event Caravan: Skyline Drive will start somewhere in Skyline Valley.

The caravans are repeatable, and although a single player can only launch one instance of the event at a time, multiple caravans launched by different players may run through the region at once. For the purposes of A Bump in the Road, it is not necessary to actually complete the player's own instance of the event, and can instead join someone else's caravan, if one is active.

Once Caravan: Skyline Drive is completed, the player is prompted to return to Marley again at Milepost Zero. She will thank the player for their help. A Bump in the Road will finish, rewarding 100 Supplies, though one can continue to work with Marley and upgrade the location of Milepost Zero.

Bugs[]

  • PCPC When approaching the dead pack brahmin at Stony Man Lookout, it may not display an inventory from which to pick up the cargo. Joining a different server may solve the issue, though Stony Man Lookout will need to be cleared out and searched again.[verification needed]
  • PCPC The instance of Caravan: Skyline Drive that is launched by this quest may be bugged upon fast traveling to it, as the brahmin will suddenly and inexplicably die even with no enemies around. One can return to Marley to relaunch the event and try again for free. However, even if the player joins and completes another active instance of the event (not their own) to try to complete the objective, they will still have to return to Marley and complete their own non-failed caravan. This leads to a situation in which two objectives are displayed by the quest, one where the quest believes the caravan was successful (from someone else's successful caravan), and one where it believes the caravan failed (from the player's own failed caravan). However, Marley's dialogue for the failed caravan will take priority, effectively meaning that the player must complete their own iteration of the event, even though this is not a requirement of the quest otherwise.[verification needed]
