The 5.56mm pistol is a weapon added with the Fallout: New Vegas add-on Gun Runners' Arsenal.

Background[]

This section is transcluded from .223 pistol. To change it, please edit the transcluded page.

The first .223 pistol was modified from a full sized .223 revolving rifle, belonging to Irwin, a farmer outside of the Hub. He cut his rifle down to the size of a large pistol.[1] This unique weapon offered firepower comparable to a hunting rifle in the compact package of a pistol. Five rounds of .223 ammunition were more than enough to deal with most dangers out in the wastes.[2]

This iconic sidearm caught the eye of gunsmiths in the following years, and the pistol saw mass production but was modified to fully accommodate the more powerful 5.56mm.[3][Non-game 1] Vestigial elements, such as the double triggers, were shed to improve performance. The internal mechanisms are retained from the original .223 revolving rifle, modified as needed to create a powerful double-action revolver.[4]

5.56 pistol expanded

Much like its unique variant That Gun, the 5.56mm pistol is a heavily modified, pared-down .223 pistol, successor to the same weapon that was popular during the time of Fallout and Fallout 2. It has a motorized cylinder and crane for quicker shooting and reloading. When reloading, the cylinder mechanically swings open to the left and auto-ejects the spent casings for a more efficient reload time. The green light on the left side turns yellow while reloading, then turns green and emits a ringing noise once the weapon has reloaded. The two variants of this weapon share the capability to use dedicated armor piercing rounds, a trait that is unique among pistols.

Unlike That Gun, the 5.56mm pistol is considered an improved holdout weapon. Along with its unique variant, it is the only pistol in the game that loads armor piercing ammunition that does not require having the Hand Loader perk to fabricate.

Durability[]

The 5.56mm pistol can fire a total of about 870 standard rounds, or 174 reloads, from full condition before breaking.

Notes[]

Behind the scenes[]

Like That Gun, this pistol is modeled on the pistol used by Rick Deckard, the main character of the film Blade Runner, though it is not an exact copy. That Gun and the 5.56mm pistol being used to destroy 15 robots as part of the Benefit Or a Hazard challenge is a direct nod to this.
