Our wiki has existed since 2005, and the anonymous have been allowed to edit freely until 2021. In that time, the wiki never fell, but rather, thrived due to their innumerous contributions to our fair wiki.
The initial idea behind the anon ban was simply to help deter a single user from circumventing their ban using VPNs, which ended up only being partially effective, because they still went through the effort to simply create new accounts. How do I know that? Because I'm the one who first created the anon ban, which was only supposed to be temporary until a rogue admin decided to make it permanent.
If you're worried about the idea of anons and have questions on what their presence is like, I'd love to take this chance to answer them. To go ahead and answer a few:
1) While the anonymous have been known to vandalize our wiki, this is not a unique scenario, and registered users also vandalize.
2) We have a neat little tool called the AbuseFilter that catches most instances of vandalism and spam and removes it all. The days of spam bots and mass vandalism have gone the way of the dodo, and have been gone for many years.
3) The anonymous are not actually all that anonymous. Each anonymous user has a unique ID that can be identified by staff, and largely acts as their username.
4) For the few vandals that do get through, anonymous users can still be banned, and further, they can be range-banned if they keep coming back by cycling their IP. Even if our local administration can't handle a bout of vandalism, our host, Fandom, has a volunteer task force known as SOAP that can easily and quickly compliment our administration.
