Since Fo3 was when I got into the series, the impression I got from ghouls is that they're supposed to look like rotting abominations and because of that they face a lot of social stigmas for their appearance. Because of this, I've always been interested in the idea if a Fallout game will have something like an Elder Scrolls race selection and allow races like super mutants and ghouls to be playable characters and get alternate responses from NPCs.
A "mile in ones' shoes" sort of interest.
But when I first played Fo4 and met John Hancock, I couldn't help notice he or the other Fo4 ghouls were not as ugly as Fo3 ghouls. While still have scarred skin, their skin seems more healthy than Fo3 ghouls, and he seems somewhat handsome for a ghoul. Same for The Ghoul in the upcoming TV series, who looks like Goggins with just some mild skin irritation all over. Sure, he lost his nose, but his teeth, eyes and ears still look healthy.
I'm reminded of the fanfilm Nuka Break, which likely had less of a budget than Amazon is providing, yet Ben still had a convincing ghoulish appearance.
I'm just saying, should ghouls look ugly and scary for the sake of lore and not be prettified just to look appealing to audience/Hollywood standard of beauty? Because wouldn't that just defeat the point of it all?
