NY, contrary to popular belief, was not annihilated in Fallout. Most people will cite the city having a reactor meltdown pre war, but that incident was later retconned and even in it it's stated there was no significant damage as a result.

The only thing we do know is that the city itself was struck by a nuke (mentioned in F4 at one of the news stations you visit and in the opening). There is also a theory that the skyscraper city infested with mutants mentioned in a Prydwen log is NYC, but that isn't definitively confirmed.

I'd personally err on the side of the city being inhabitable, since characters in Fallout 76 mentioned surviving there and Pagliarulo stated that is one location that's been set aside as a possible future game setting.

I’ve never been clear on if NY was obliterated or not. I read a lot of sources that say it is or isn’t so I’m guessing a lot of that is head canon. I mean…DC looks leveled but a lot of stuff is still standing in F3. DC is also the capital so I don’t see how NY would’ve been a bigger target. I was gonna go with Chicago but it would be too similar to F3 with the inevitable enclave BOS clash.

I'm fairly sure it would be very very damages it just feels like a primary target for the bombs... But then again, DC wasn't obliterated entirely and I feel like that's a bigger target

Since we're on the topic of NY now, It's been confirmed that NYC is not a crater but the Manhattan area possibly is (Or is atleast heavily irradiated and uninhabitable)

On the topic of NY, if they ever do NY, I would hope it's something like what Palladium Games did with their RIFTS RPG. I just love the idea of NYC wastelanders changing the name of Manhattan into something like "Madhaven" or possibly "Madhatten".

Since there has been a fair share of mentions, I'd say San Francisco is still the most likely area for a future Fallout 5 to be set in, even if I'd prefer the Midwest to bridge the Wets Coast-East Coast divide and canonize Tactics.

Tactics has to be the lightest subject to tread on. its like walking on a bunch of REALLY fragile deathclaw eggs and the people who start the arguments are the deathclaws. but yeah i kinda do wanna see one in san francisco.
