Boone's an interesting character but I always end up feeling like I'm the follower and he's the hero when he trashes everything in a two mile radius with his sniper rifle.
Veronica is probably the follower I find gels best with my style. Me and Boone kind of stand on each other's toes, but give Veronica some power armour and let her go to work with the fisticuffs- that works for me. I can deal with enemies at range and she can clobber anyone and anything that closes the gap, good old meat shield + glass cannon set up.
In terms of good company it comes down to Cass and Arcade, out of the two of them I lean towards Arcade because of his idealism. In a pinch I'll choose Arcade, but I like hanging out with both him and Cass in equal measure. I barely keep companions around for combat anyway, I play on hardcore mode so I'd rather not put them in the line of danger most of the time. I just do low-stakes side quests with companions, stuff that can advance their loyalty missions. It's all about the personality and stories for me, gameplay benefits I can take or leave.
