If you had to join the Minutemen or the Brotherhood of Steel, which would you choose and why?
Assume for this post that both are alive and breathing, and that we're talking about joining the East Coast Chapter Brotherhood of Steel in 2287.
This is also your preference coming from yourself, not from the position of the Sole Survivor, as they practically remake the Minutemen.
On the one hand..
We have the Minutemen. Once a footnote to history, they are back on the rise in the Commonwealth and amassing power through the support of settlements scattered all around. Citizen soldiers make up the bulk of their army, with their militia's goal being "Protection at a Minute's notice". They utilise their signature laser muskets and spiffy revolutionary-style uniforms to peacekeep in the wasteland, as well as making use of conveniently placed, deadly artillery batteries to rain down explosive ordinance on any unlucky enough to have a flare thrown at them. The Minutemen are undoubtedly one of the most morally righteous factions we have encountered in the Fallout series, as they simply seek to aid in innocent people's protection and the progression of human civilisation. The Minutemen, for this reason, have the capacity to create a nation, as they have tried to do before with the Commonwealth Provisional Government, however those efforts were laid to waste by The Institute. The Minutemen also make use of Radio Freedom and Fort Independence (which they now call "The Castle").
However, the last time they collapsed, it was due to political infighting. This also has the potential to happen again, unless of course, perhaps they learned their lesson. The Minutemen are also quite poorly equipped and trained in comparison to what comes next, relying mostly on experience and what they can scrounge. Despite this, you can argue that their hearts are in the right place.
However, on the other..
The Brotherhood of Steel collect and preserve technology, in order to keep it out of the hands of those who would abuse it. They originate from US Military deserters and their founder, Captain Roger Maxson. High Elder Roger Maxson established the hierarchy and structure of the Brotherhood, as well as the core principles of their beliefs. On the East Coast, unlike their Western counterparts, they are far less xenophobic and willing to accept outsiders as members. They arrived in the Commonwealth to wage war on The Institute, who they believe are endangering mankind with the creation of the synth. The Brotherhood of Steel's signature equipment are their power armour and reliance on laser weaponry, as well as the occasional Gauss Rifle, Minigun and plasma weapon. They designed and built the Prydwen, the most advanced and sole airship of the Brotherhood arsenal that is operational, created in six years from parts taken from Adams AFB. They also have support from various other Brotherhood chapters spread around the US, and supposedly watch over the Capital Wasteland with ease.
However, they have an obsession with collecting and confiscating technology, and often disregard direct aid for this purpose. They are prejudiced against other non-human groups of the wasteland, which includes non-feral ghouls and passive Super Mutants. They also outright destroy most synths without hesitation, even passive ones. They also seem to have a lack of interest in consolidating power through statesmanship and governance, preferring their strict military hierarchy. For some reason the Brotherhood's reputation amongst the inhabitants of the Commonwealth appears to be indifferent or strained, with many from Diamond City and Goodneigbour expressing (ever so slight) disapproval.
So, what do they have in common?
They both fight against hostile groups in the wasteland, such as Super Mutants and Raiders. They also prioritise the progress of humanity, albeit in different ways. Both have the capacity to do real good in the wasteland through differing actions and behaviour.
So, you're in Diamond City and you see two recruitment stalls adjacent from one another; Brotherhood of Steel and Minutemen. Which counter are you walking up to and why?
